Iran through my Eyes January 2017

The collection 2014-2016 “Iran through my Eyes”

The art gathered for this exhibition has been inspired from my rich experiences in Iran since my arrival on August 24, 2014. Through the people I have met, the markets I have wandered, places I have visited, friends I have made and especially the warm welcome from the Iranians to a stranger like me; all this has inspired me and is infused in my paintings.

Report

I started to use an old Iranian technique as well as the materials I found in Iran: soft sand and colourful stones from Dashte Kavir Desert, some black sand gathered from the Caspian Sea, some stones left by a construction company in front of a building on the 5th street in Tehran and especially when I bought the paints here, I tried to use the Iranian ones.
One of my paintings was inspired by a kind old man in the Dashte Kavir Desert. I had not even noticed that the plastic bag I was carrying with the sand was torn, he helped me fill in several empty bottles so I would not lose my sand.
I have on many occasions, been surprised by how satisfied people are with their lives, even if they are living in difficult conditions.
In the year 2015 Iran taught me that ‘true love’ still exists. I got to know a young Iranian astronomer couple who left their jobs and civilization to work in the desert as walking tour guides during the day, and at night they are stargazers.

Traffic in Tehran is always indescribable, but this is how I learnt to remain calm and not to let a bad situation influence my life. In some difficult moments, one can still find the kindness to stop the car and let the other go first.
At the beginning of my time in Iran, I went to buy bread in a local bread shop without any knowledge of the Persian language. A middle aged lady came to me, asking in Persian what kind of bread I would like and how many pieces. That all happened with body language. I said “one” and pointed to the bread I wanted. She carried the hot bread and burned her arm whilst doing it for me, a total stranger. This impression has remained with me to this day.

I hope you enjoy looking at “Iran through my Eyes”
